Art At Noon: Arts Criticism and John Rhoden with Brittany Webb and TK Smith

Wednesday, February 21, 2024

12:00 - 1:00 PM (online)

Join Brittany Webb and TK Smith as they consider how the press covered John Rhoden's career as well as discuss how arts criticism impacts the careers of artists today.  John Rhoden was a highly acclaimed artist of his day, but is underrecognized in American art history.  Rhoden was well-known to African American audiences because his art, awards, and travels were covered by the leading Black magazines of the day, Ebony and Jet, but critical reviews of his exhibitions were rare.

TK Smith is a Philadelphia-based curator, writer, and cultural historian. He is Assistant Curator: Art of the African Diaspora at the Barnes Foundation. His writing has been published in Art in America, the Brooklyn Rail, and ART PAPERS. Currently, Smith is a doctoral candidate in the History of American Civilization program at the University of Delaware.

Brittany Webb is the Evelyn and Will Kaplan Curator of Twentieth-Century Art and the John Rhoden Collection. In this role, Webb oversees the Museum’s collections, exhibitions, and programs of 20th century art and provides instruction for the School of Fine Arts at PAFA.
