The History of African American Art

This four-part series, taught by scholar Imani Roach, will present some of the major movements and enduring themes in the history of African American art from the 19th century until the present day. Lectures will pay special attention to the socio-political context within which black artists have worked and will highlight connections both to Afro-diasporic traditions and to the history of American Art.

July 16 | The Harlem Renaissance: The New Negro
July 23 | The Black Art Movement: Art and Politics
July 30 | The Contemporary Scene: African- American Art and the Diaspora
